The Ultimate Guide to Playground Safety

For schools, local governments, and commercial premises, having a playground installed on site can be a massive benefit. Keeping kids happy and occupied (along with parents, too!) can make your space more attractive and welcoming. However, it’s extremely important to ensure that your playground is a safe place. Daredevil children exist across all corners of the globe!

Here is our ultimate guide to ensure safety on the playground.

Use fencing

A lot of the time, child safety simply has to do with making sure the parent knows where the child is at all times! Add fencing around your playground to ensure kids are always in the area and can’t easily run off.

Make sure  any new playground equipment is built and installed to local, state, and federal safety laws

This is extremely important when it comes to safety – following all regulations. If you fail to comply with local, state, or federal laws concerning playground safety, then you are at risk of contracting fines, getting shut down, and more.

Have plenty of space for parents/supervisors to watch children

Adequate adult supervision is key to playground safety. Make sure that there is ample space for people to watch children, and that there are not so many “hidden spaces” throughout the playground. Benches for parents and supervisors to watch on from are encouraged.

Install equipment for different age groups

Often, parents bring children of various ages to play at the park or playground. Providing equipment for a range of ages means that toddlers will have safe equipment to play on and not be out of their depth trying to go on equipment made for older children.

Have soft ground covering underfoot

Trips and falls will inevitably happen in a playground – kids are yet quite as coordinated as us! This is why you should carefully choose what is underneath the playground, as well as the playground itself. Materials like Poured in Place rubber allow a cushioning effect, while at the same time still hard wearing.

Ensure the playground is kept in good repair

It’s not something that you probably think about when constructing a playground, but maintenance is also an important issue, especially when there are moving parts within the playground. Factor into your plan, regular maintenance and safety check ups. These may be performed by a Certified Playground Safety Inspector and should be done as often as is necessary. In winter months ensure that icy surfaces are not making your playground unsafe for use.
